Springboard to faster service creation
We talk to David Noguer Bau, Juniper Networks’ global head of telco vertical marketing, about Juniper’s unique new Cloud CPE solution. We asked what the new platform brings for service providers and systems integrators alike.

If service providers asked for more flexible pricing arrangements, would Juniper consider them?
Absolutely. I am glad you have raised this point. I handle many of those conversations with our customers.
The current pricing model comes as a result of understanding our customers’ go-to-market (GTM) models. As we find new implementation models, we will adjust our pricing options accordingly. Ultimately, it is in our interest to provide a pricing model that aligns to our customer’s GTM strategy and reduces their business risks in such a dynamic market.
At Juniper, we run the Service Creation Program which has been designed to help our SP customers accelerate the adoption of NFV for business services. This program includes areas such as service definition or business analysis that will provide a better view of the costs associated to launch the service and how it aligns with the revenues over a period of time.
Does the distributed model have to run on Juniper NFX hardware?
Currently the Juniper Cloud CPE distributed model is tested and supported to manage Juniper Networks NFX250.

What are the opportunities for systems integrators?
“What we are seeing in the market around NFV is far more demand for collaboration and openness in the eco-system.”There will be few projects out there that are single vendor.
Ultimately it is a requirement because it is what customers have been demanding for years. They no longer want to tolerate any vendor lock-in. So when a customer says, ‘I want a Cloud CPE solution that has a little bit of Unified Communications (UC), a bit of WAN acceleration and some security’, these solutions will most likely come from three to four different vendors.
Multivendor solutions sound well and good, but who does the service provider go to as the primary or support contact? Who do they call when something goes wrong? It can be difficult for customers to track back to a successful resolution in this case. They need a service level agreement (SLA) with one supplier. However, “with the emergence of NFV there is a clear play for both systems integrators and vendor partners to help here” but a bit of work needs to be done in re-defining who handles which elements of the stack. I think there is an opportunity for the systems integrators as the sole contractor or ‘point of support’. They have the in-house skills and technical experience to work across these complex multi-vendor environments.

Do you see potential for Internet of Things (IoT) applications to run as VNFs in the future?
Eventually, yes. IoT architectures normally include a large number of small devices (sensors, cameras, etc), distributed and a centralized IoT controller for each of the multiple applications. The connectivity is made through different networks. Each IoT application might have specific requirements from the network.
By combining the IoT and NFV platforms, every time a service provider turns on a new IoT controller, it will also turn on dedicated VNFs to satisfy the network requirements. The traffic has to be service-chained through the multiple VNFs and the IoT controller VM. This model provides a fully automated platform.
